Job Description:
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under general supervision of sworn or civilian personnel, a Police
Cadet performs tasks in various divisions of the Police Department
including but not limited to: lobby reception, records, patrol,
traffic, and property control; in conjunction with a formal
training program designed for career advancement into the law
enforcement field; performs related duties as assigned.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This is an entry level, civilian level classification intended as
an educational and career development. In addition to serving a
support role within the Police Department, this classification is
intended to expose the incumbent to a wide variety of law
enforcement duties, gain experience in the work place. This
position will prepare the incumbent to progress toward achieving a
future career, possibly within the law enforcement field.

CURRENT VACANCY: Multiple part-time vacancies exist at the Upland
Police Department.
SALARY: Listed hourly wage indicates the first and last steps of
the range for the position.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the

* Assist the public at the counter; assists with crime prevention
programs and community relations programs.
* Receives and provides information on the telephone and in
person.
* Operatescomputers and copiers.
* Maintains records and files.
* Provides fingerprint services to the public.
* Performs other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION GUIDELINES
Knowledge of:
Knowledge of basic office methods and procedures; understand and
follow both oral and written directions; respond to public and
staff requests for assistance both on the phone and in person by
applying good customer service techniques; may perform routine
clerical work in an office environment, which may involve sitting
for extended periods of time, bending, stooping, reaching,
standing, or lifting.
Ability to:
Ability to operate police radio communications equipment, a copy
machine and telephone, and drive a vehicle; maintain effective
working relationships with the public and other employees; may be
exposed to vibrations, computer glare, direct sunlight, heat,
humidity, rain or cold while working outdoors; noises such as, but
not limited to, sirens, alarms, vehicular traffic, gunfire, or
radio communication equipment.
Education:
Graduation from high school or equivalent; college enrollment with
a concentration in criminal justice is highly desirable.
Licenses/Certificates/ and Special Requirements:
Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class "C" California
driver's license, an acceptable driving record and evidence of
insurability.
Background Investigation:
Applicants will undergo a complete, comprehensive, POST approved
Background Investigation.
Character:
Applicants must be of good character and reputation.
Applicants will be fingerprinted and records checkedat both State
and Federallevels.
Applicants must not have a record of conviction of a serious
offense, or numerous convictions of minor offenses.
Credit rating, if established, must be satisfactory.

Step 2: Written Examinations:Qualified applicants will be required
to successfully pass the written POST Pellet B Examination with a
T-score of 46 or higher.Qualified applicants will be invited via
email to the written examination. Applicants may submit written
t-scores from other agencies for examinations taken within the last
12 months. T-scores shall be sent to 2488@uplandpd.org for
consideration.

Step 3: Oral Interview:Qualified applicants will be required to
complete oral interviews as part of the recruitment process.
Step 4: Background Investigation and Administrative
Interviews:Qualified applicants will undergo a complete,
comprehensive, POST approved Background Investigation including
aPolygraph Examination.Upon completion of the background
investigation, applicants may be invited to an Administrative
Interview.
Step 5: Conditional Job Offer:Following the successful completion
of all prior steps, candidates may be made a conditional job offer.
Job offers are conditional upon the successful completion of
amedicalexamination.
Step 6: Medical Examinations:Qualified applicants will complete a
full medical examination, including drug screening.

Physical Demands:
While performing the duties of this class, employees are regularly

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision

problems; observe and interpret situations; learn and apply new
information or skills; perform highly detailed work on multiple,

encountered in the course of work.
